Frequently Asked Questions
Are the needles going to hurt? Contrary to what many people think, acupuncture is surprisingly painless. Unlike injection needles used in Western medicine, acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible about the diameter of a human hair. The sensations that patients may experience during acupuncture range from nothing at all to a brief ache or heaviness in the area being needled. However, some individuals may be more sensitive than others. Likewise, some points in the body are more sensitive than others. By and large patients have described such sensations as fleeting and the treatment experience as deeply relaxing.
Are acupuncture needles sterile and safe? Yes. We use only sterile disposable needles. They are used once and then discarded.
How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture is designed to correct various imbalances within the body. Qi, the vital energy system in our body, is different from the nervous and blood circulatory system while also regulating them. Acupuncture needles work as antennae to correct this vital energy system which, in turn, affects our entire body function.
How many treatments will I need? Because each person’s condition and response to treatment are unique, the total number and frequency of treatments will vary. In general, chronic conditions take longer to resolve, while acute conditions that are short in duration may yield curative effects as few as one treatment.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance? A growing number of insurance programs cover acupuncture treatments. Consult with your insurance company for the terms of coverage in your policy.
What should I do before and after my acupuncture session? We recommend patient to wear loose and comfortable clothing for easy access to acupuncture points. Don't skip the meal before Acupuncture treatment; however, do not eat too heavy meals just before or after your visit. Refrain from caffeine, drugs, or alcohol during the day of treatment. Avoid intense physical activity before or after your treatment. After your treatment, avoid stressful situations. Make time to relax.
